International
shipping puts many demands on a package and these should be
taken into consideration:
Breakage
All packages should be securely wrapped and packaged sufficiently.
Often packages are stored on top of each other and handled
by chutes, conveyors and other less sophisticated facilities,
thus putting extra strain on the package.
Moisture
The
varying humidity levels from country to country must be considered
as a hazard as the high moisture levels can seriously damage
many goods. Condensation can build up onboard a vessel and
not all are fitted with dehumidifiers. It is also worth noting
that sometimes a vessel may be loaded while it is raining.
Pilferage
Although
generally uncommon with international shipments, it is not
unheard of and must be considered when packing, so ensure
products are insured for the correct amount and packed securely.
Ways to avoid pilferage include not specifying brand names
and exact contents on the actual package and to use shrink
wrapping where possible, or straps/seals.
Excess
Weight
Make sure all weight is evenly distributed around the package
as this will reduce the risk of damage when being moved. Use
straps if you think the package may need to be handled personally
to ease lifting.
